Azania Jazz Co. Shifts Direction with New Release ‘What Africa?’

Contemporary jazz and electronic collective Azania Jazz Co. has unveiled their latest album, What Africa?, marking another major milestone in what has been an exceptionally active year for the group. Released across digital platforms this week, the album follows the ensemble’s prior 2026 records, Afro Jazz Nights and Between Africa’s Rivers.

Industry watchers have noted the contrast between this release and the group’s previous works. While earlier albums focused on classic lounge aesthetics and acoustic heritage landscapes, What Africa? brings a noticeable shift in energy and rhythmic drive. The arrangements blend driving dance rhythms and gospel vocal interpolations into a cohesive, high-energy instrumental project.

The project presents a 13-part tracklist featuring selections such as “Free at Last, Broke at Last”, “Constitution”, “Helicopter”, “Prosperity Gospel”, “Another Church?”, “Cold Drink”, “Door to Door”, “Madlanga”, “Xenophobia”, “Abahambe!”, “Mhondoro”, and “Nashi Nashi”. The artwork features a surrealist design showing a television playing static resting atop traditional attire, further signaling a new artistic chapter for the band.

What Africa? is now streaming globally, cementing Azania Jazz Co. as one of the most prolific South African acts of 2026.
