Unathi is a singer, songwriter, Idols Judge and radio host who continues to fly the South African flag high as she continues to garner international accolades. Unathi is a Rhodes University Journalism and Drama graduate, a University of Utrecht International Media studies graduate, Unathi moved to Johannesburg in 2001 becoming a presenter for Castle Loud and then moved onto the YFM platform. Now she co hosts Metro FM’s breakfast show with the legendary Glen Lewis.
Musically Unathi has wooed audiences of all calibers. Performing for the United Nations delegates she evoked such strong emotions that legendary producer Quincy Jones gave her a standing ovation and proceeded to join her on stage during her performance to sing her praises. She has shared the stage with international greats such John Legend and Yossou Ndou.
This young Power House has graced South Africa’s biggest stage and the fourth largest stage in the world, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival as well as the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz alongside many other. One of her proudest achievements is writing her song “Sgubhu” which is on the soundtrack for the Oscar/Academy Award winning movie “Tsotsi”.
Over the years she has collected a string of accolades that have stamped her as one of the most influential women in entertainment. In 2003, she walked away with two awards at the Metro FM Music Awards, for Song of The Year and Best Dressed Artist. 2004 & 2005 She was named as one of the Top Ten people in Media by The Star newspaper and was named as the most promising woman in media at the MTN Media Awards, hosted by Media Magazine. Unathi has also been nominated twice at the South African Music awards. Her most recent accolades, being voted as South Africa’s Best Female at the Annual Metro FM Music Awards and nominated for Best Urban Pop Album at the MTN SAMA’s.
This young lady continues to reinvent herself through the years and with only 12 years of experience under her belt, it is evident that South Africa has given birth to a true gem, Unathi.
Unathi is the first African to voice a Character on Walt Disney Junior on the incredibly popular show Doc Mc Stuffins. Unathi was also nominated for Best South African Radio Host at the Nicolodean Kids Choice Awards 2014 hosted in Hollywood California. Lucky Bean Media which she co-owns was nominated for an International Emmy Award, hosted in New York, for their work on Master Chef South Africa and her Live Music DVD was nominated for Best DVD at the South African Music Awards.
